PS 22 + Phoenix

Last fall I posted a clip featuring New York City's Public School 22 singing "Pictures of You" by the Cure. Most recently, they covered Phoenix's "Lisztomania" and it's soooooo wonderful. Just check out the kids' reaction to singing the song.

Again, the P.S. 22 Chorus is comprised of 70 fifth graders, and they've covered songs by Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, Tori Amos, Crowded House and more. They're pretty special. I wish my future kids could experience this!

Klosterman vs. Twitter

Author and journalist Chuck Klosterman appears on Air America Media to take on Twitter and Facebook, and offers some insight on their social impact. I'm a dedicated user of both mediums, but I often ask myself, "Why, why do we do this? What's it all for?"

Fifth Graders Sing With The Cure

Many many thanks to my friend Rob for passing this along. Here, the PS22 Chorus in New York City does a pretty amazing rendition of The Cure's "Picture of You." The group is comprised of 70 fifth graders, and the following clip is quite an emotional one, for this was last day of school for the 2009 class. The PS22 Chorus has also covered songs by Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, Tori Amos, Crowded House and more. Absolutely lovely!

Printing the Internet

There has to be someone in this effed up world that would actually try to complete this insanely ridiculous move, right? Someone out there would certainly want to *try,* I'm sure.

Anyhow, did you know that the task of printing out the entire Internet would take 57,000 years, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? And you'd would have had to started printing in 1800BC. The folks at Creative Cloud offer a bunch of other clever and interesting infographics about the world, and what not. Pretty fun stuff.

On the Cover of a Magazine

I heart Magazine Art, for they truly indulge my magazine-junkie collecting ways. The San Jose, California-based website's painstaking efforts in archiving, thus showcasing magazine covers of yesteryear is incredibly impressive. These rare covers date as far back as 1850. Here are some of my favorites:

Switch Up Your SIGG

I'm sure many of you were as disappointed as I was to learn that SIGG water bottles weren't so eco-friendly after all.

The Swiss-made, non-leaching, stainless steel water bottles made before August 2008 apparently aren't BPA-free. I was really bummed to learn this, for I spent something like twenty-some dollars on a WATER BOTTLE in early 2007. This was after I'd been using a Nalgene water bottle years prior, only to be told that those were bad for your health, too.

There's a bright side to all of this: The BIGG Bottle Swap! The Soft Landing, one of the country's top website for healthy, non-toxic eating gear and a leader in fighting chemical Bisphenol A (BPA), has partnered with Cool Mom Picks for a super cool project that allows the public to trade in their SIGG water bottles.

So here's the deal: Now through September 14th, send in your old SIGG aluminum bottles in exchange for a special 30% discount on your choice of smart stainless steel alternatives, including Kid Basix's Safe Sporter, Klean Kanteen, CamelBak, Thermos, and more. And if you don't have a SIGG water bottle to trade in, you can still get 20% off a new bottle. How COOL!

Happy Mustard Day!

Um, I don't use ketchup and I don't really care for mayonnaise. Since the beginning of time, I've been mad for mustard. Seriously. I don't do it up crazy-style like some might with ketchup and eggs, but I have been having mustard with my french fries since I was 5. Sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs are pretty much a given. Steak, sure. French's, Plochman's, Heinz's, (and once in a while, Grey Poupon) whatever ... mustard is my bag when it comes to condiments, yo!

To my delight, the first Saturday in August is National Mustard Day. Who knew? Well, the folks in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin celebrate the bright yellow spread with plenty of hot dogs as well as music, games, other entertainment, and all the mustard samples you want and then some. The Mount Horeb Mustard Museum has sponsored this annual event since 1991.

Total best!

Kind of Cool

If I was into dropping an ollie on a half-pipe (or whatever lingo you wanna go with), I'd really be into this. But since I do have an affinity for Miles Davis, I'm still really into this. San Francisco-based illustrator Ian Johnson is the master behind these Miles Davis Quintet-themed skateboards, featuring the 1959 lineup that appeared on Kind of Blue. Um, kind of awesome!

Gettin' Jiggy at Church

Ok, I just couldn't resist posting the following clip. Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz were recently married in St. Paul, Minnesota and delivered some funky moves (and then some) while walking down the aisle. The newlyweds have become Internet superstars in just under a week -- the couple posted the clip for family and friends via YouTube on Sunday, and this morning they were sitting on the couch at the TODAY Show.

Anyhow, this video is amazing. Everyone looks like they're having an incredible time. Weddings are supposed to be *THIS* much fun. Ryan and I experienced much of the same excitement at our Michigan nuptials nearly a month ago.

What Are Words For?

Did you know that a new English word is created about every 98 minutes? WTF? For reals? For reals. The Global Language Monitor says so and today (June 10) the English language earned its millionth word.

... and the millionth word is: Web 2.0. Go figure.

For those who aren't familiar, Web 2.0 describes the next generation of web products and services.

Supreme linguists aren't too happy with the GLM's choice. The GLM maintain that their math formula, which tracks words and phrases in electronic and print media, found that "Web 2.0" appeared over 25,000 times, thus worthy enough to be crowned the one millionth word.

Check out the latest 10 additions to the English language:

- 999,999: Jai Ho! – The Hindi phrase signifying the joy of victory, used as an exclamation, sometimes rendered as “It is accomplished”. Achieved English-language popularity through the multiple Academy Award-winning film, "Slumdog Millionaire."

- 999,998: N00b — From the Gamer Community, a neophyte in playing a particular game; used as a disparaging term.

- 999,997: Slumdog – a formerly disparaging, now often endearing, comment upon those residing in the slums of India.

- 999,996: Cloud Computing – The 'cloud' has been technical jargon for the Internet for many years. It is now passing into more general usage.

- 999,995: Carbon Neutral — One of the many phrases relating to the effort to stem Climate Change. ... HAHA I just saw this word used in an episode of Cash Cab on the Discovery Channel.

- 999,994: Slow Food — Food other than the fast-food variety hopefully produced locally.

- 999,993: Octomom – The media phenomenon relating to the travails of the mother of the octuplets.

- 999,992: Greenwashing – Re-branding an old, often inferior, product as environmentally friendly.

- 999,991: Sexting – Sending email (or text messages) with sexual content.

- 999,990: Shovel Ready – Projects are ready to begin immediately upon the release of federal stimulus funds.
